American physician and lawyer born in Mercer County, Ky., in 1830. Vermilion served as a captain during most of the Civil War, commanding Company F of the 36th Infantry Regiment of Iowa Volunteers until his discharge in August 1865, three months after having been promoted to major. From 1869-1972, Vermilion served as an elected member of the Iowa Thirteenth General Assembly. Vermilion's law practice, dating from 1861, was concerned mostly with business and family law.
