Papers, 1853-1900.

Correspondence, diaries, Union Army company morning reports, and legal documents pertaining to W.F. Vermilion's activities as husband, lawyer, physician, Civil War officer, and Iowa state representative. Of great interest are the correspondence between Vermilion and his wife and the administrative records of his unit during the Civil War. Other than anecdotal remarks in various letters, Vermilion's practice as a frontier physician is not strongly documented in the collection.
